Cuckoo Lane Health Care, in Hanwell, west London, is one example. Last year it was still an ordinary health centre, owned and run by three GPs. When they retired, the contract to provide that service was up for grabs. Three nurses who worked at the practice - Carol Sears, Nicci Boyce and Anne Hamerton - decided they would apply to take over. There would still be GPs at the practice, but the nurses wanted to control the running and make Cuckoo Lane a social enterprise. The GPs would be employed, with salaries, rather than being owners and partners
